It was 1992, and as a college freshman, I watched the election night results with a different lens - after all, it was the first year I could vote. And while absentee voting is always a bit anticlimactic, it felt great to watch returns knowing that I had some influence. Sitting there, in a hall mate's room, watching Clinton give his victory speech with Fleetwood Mac blasting in the background, I felt hope and excitement.... a new era.
I consider myself an independent voter, or unenrolled, as they call us here in Massachusetts. I was quite undecided, having been a Hillary Clinton supporter. Once I made up my mind, however, I was committed to my decision.
Last night (and this morning), with my kids and my husband, I feel a similar emotion of hope and excitement. I am proud to be an American today.
